ChewMate™ Pro Toothbrush Q&A
How does ChewMate™ Pro integrate with existing dental protocols in a Vet clinic?
- Provides an additional service of “over the gum” cleaning with or without sedation.
- Use as an adjunct to routine oral exams and maintenance brushing; incorporate into pre-op assessments, dental charting, and client education. It’s suitable for conscious “over the gum” cleaning and is not a substitute for subgingival scaling under anesthesia.
Can the ChewMate™ Pro Toothbrush kit reduce the frequency of anesthetic dental cleanings?
When used consistently as part of a comprehensive oral care plan, it can slow plaque/tartar accumulation and may reduce frequency or extent of anesthetic cleanings for most pets, but it cannot replace professional subgingival therapy when disease is established or for non-cooperative dogs.
What infection-control procedures should we follow between patients?
Remove toothbrushes from the handle between patients and disinfect per clinic policy with EPA-registered veterinary disinfectant; use PPE and follow biosecurity protocols.
Are there contraindications for use in patients with periodontal pockets or active infection?
Do not perform aggressive “over the gum” brushing on sites with deep periodontal pockets, abscesses, or acute infections—refer for professional periodontal treatment. Use gentle maintenance only after veterinary clearance.
How do you document ChewMate™ use in the medical record?
Record date/time, patient tolerance, areas brushed, bristle type used, any plaque/tartar observations, adverse events, and client instructions given for home care.
What training resources are available for staff to ensure safe technique?
ChewMate offers a complimentary oral hygiene course and ChewMate Pro instruction materials and demo videos; consider in-clinic hands-on training, competency checklists, and supervised practice sessions before staff provide service independently.
How do you manage uncooperative or anxious patients during brushing?-
Use low-stress handling, appropriate restraint, brief sessions, positive reinforcement, or sedation only when clinically indicated. Never force the mouth; abort if the patient shows escape behaviors or pain. If we can clip a pet’s nails- we can brush their teeth.
Can ChewMate™ be used on cats or only on dogs?-
Primarily designed for dogs, but a cat version is in the works. Subscribe for pre-launch notification.
What adverse events should clinics monitor and report?
Monitor for soft-tissue trauma, bleeding, broken teeth, ingestion of damaged parts, or patient distress. Stop use if adverse effects occur and report to manufacturer and record in the patient file.
Are there billing codes or ways to monetize brushing services in a clinic or grooming business?
Many clinics/groomers add a charge for professional oral care or include brushing as an add-on service. Use existing exam or nurse/procedure codes per practice policy and local regulations; document time and service provided for accurate billing.
What is the ChewMate™ Pro Toothbrush Kit and who is it for?
A professional dental kit with an ergonomic handle and replaceable dual toothbrushes scientifically designed to clean both sides of a dog’s teeth simultaneously. Intended for veterinarians, vet techs, groomers, and proactive pet parents.
How does the dual toothbrush design work?
Two adjustable toothbrushes sit on either side of a tooth row to scrub buccal ( outer) and lingual (inner) surfaces at once, reducing time and improving plaque/tartar removal compared with single-head brushes.
What sizes and bristle options are available?
The toothbrush kit for Vet Techs and Groomers include large and small dual toothbrushes in both regular bristles ( white) to remove plaque and coarse bristles ( red) to remove “over the gum” tarter. Sizes adjust to fit small to large mouths.
Toothbrushes for Pet-Parents include dual toothbrushes with regular bristles ( to remove “over the gum” plaque.
What materials are used and are they pet-safe?
Handle is durable, veterinary-grade plastic with a finger protector and mouth prop. Brush heads use veterinary and human-safe nylon bristles. All materials are non-toxic and intended for oral use.
Can the toothbrushes be replaced and where do I get replacements?
Yes — toothbrushes are replaceable and adjustable. Replacement toothbrushes are available through the ChewMate™ website getchewmate.com and authorized distributors.
How often should I replace toothbrushes?
Pet Parents commonly replace toothbrushes every 3-6 months or sooner if bristles fray, and immediately if damaged or after the pet is ill (to avoid re-infection). Vet Techs and Groomers replace more frequently depending on use.
Is the ChewMate™ suitable for “over the gum” cleaning by trained techs and groomers?
Yes. It is specifically designed to perform safe “over the gum” plaque and tartar removal especially when used by trained professionals who follow proper technique. Included with every purchase of a Vet Tech and Groomer Toothbrush Kit is a one hour course on Pet Oral Hygiene and use of the ChewMate™ Pro Toothbrush System. ChewMate™ Oral Care And Wellness Certification Certificate which can be hung in the clinic and posted on social media is given on successful completion of the course.
What safety features are included?
Built-in finger protector, mouth prop to reduce hand intrusion or accidental biting, ergonomic handle for secure grip, and dual-head design for efficiency, ease, visibility and control.
Do I need special training to use the Pro kit?
Basic training in animal handling and dental technique is recommended for professionals; the kit is designed to be intuitive but proper technique improves safety and efficacy. Detailed instructions are attached through QR code. Included with every purchase of a Vet Tech and Groomer Kit is a one hour course on Pet Oral Hygiene and use of the ChewMate™ Pro Toothbrush System. ChewMate™ Oral Care And Wellness Certification Certificate is given on successful completion of the course.
Can groomers add tooth brushing to routine services with this kit?
Yes— “over the gum” brushing is a sought after service that most pet parents would be grateful for and the speed and dual-action design make it practical to integrate “over the gum” brushing into grooming appointments when staff are trained and with clients consent.
What age or dental conditions are contraindications?
Use gentle technique for puppies/geriatric patients. Avoid aggressive brushing on pets with loose teeth, severe periodontal disease, oral trauma, or recent oral surgery until cleared by a veterinarian.
How should I clean and disinfect the handle and toothbrushes between sessions.
Remove brush heads for cleaning. Clean with warm soapy water after each use; disinfect heads/handle per product instructions (e.g., dilute vet-approved disinfectant or soaking solution). Allow to dry completely before reassembly. Vent holes help drying.
Is the TreatBrush™ chew-toy compatible with the ChewMate™ Pro toothbrushes?
TreatBrush™ is a separate biofilm removing chew-toy product but designed to complement brushing routines and brushes and flosses a dog’s teeth as he chews and plays and helps clean teeth between brushing.
Which toothpastes are recommended?
Use pet-safe enzymatic or veterinary-formulated toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste. Apply a small amount between bristles.
How often should I brush a dog with this system?
Daily brushing is ideal; aim for at least 3–4 times per week. Frequency may be increased based on risk factors and veterinary recommendation.
What clinical benefits can I communicate to clients?
Regular brushing reduces plaque and tartar accumulation, lowers risk of periodontal disease, and is associated with improved systemic (including heart) health. It can reduce the need for anesthetic dental cleanings when started early and done consistently. The more “over the gum” cleaning you do- the less “under the gum” cleaning under general anesthesia your pet will require.
Are there peer-reviewed studies or validation for this design?
The product is science backed and was developed with dental specialists in cooperation with veterinarians and is designed for “over the gum” cleaning of dental plaque and tarter. Reference specific validation studies or white papers from the manufacturer for clinical data and test results.
How do I select the right toothbrush size and bristle type for a dog?
Choose bristle coarseness based on calculus burden (regular bristles for plaque removal and maintenance; coarse for heavy tartar) and head size to match mouth size. Large breeds 25 lb and over; small breeds under 25 lb.
What are storage and shelf-life recommendations?
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Replace brush heads according to wear.
What warranty, support, and ordering options are available for clinics?
Manufacturer provides product warranty and customer support; professional kits are sold in multi-head packs for clinics. Contact the manufacturer or authorized distributor for warranty terms, bulk pricing, and training resources.
